In an article published in Healthcare Risk Management on June 24, 2015, John Ivins discusses the risks for hospitals and other institutional healthcare providers of not following the revised guidelines from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regarding workplace violence just published in April 2015. He notes that in 2011, OSHA issued Enforcement Procedures for Investigating and Inspecting Workplace Violence Incidents, document number CPL 02-01-052 which guides inspectors in reviewing compliance. Ivins suggests that risk managers study the new guidelines as well as this enforcement procedures document to assess compliance with OSHA’s requirements. Failure to protect employees from workplace violence can result in a general duty clause citation from OSHA which is serious, significant and costly. Click here to read the full article.
