Robert "Bob" Hughes is a member in the firm’s Real Estate Section, and
a member of the firm’s Real Estate Securities Practice Group. His practice
focuses on the finance, acquisition, sale, leasing and development of
commercial real estate, with a particular concentration on tenant-in-common
like-kind exchange transactions and shopping center development.
The following matters illustrate Bob’s experience:
Representation of several national clients that acquire properties utilizing
tenant-in-common ownership.
Successful negotiation of financing documents, ground leases, space leases
and purchase and sale agreements in connection with the development of
several shopping centers.
Acquisition and financing (including mezzanine financing) of partnership
interests in a partnership that owned an apartment complex in Florida for
approximately $36.9 million.
Development of mixed-use condominium project in Farmville, Virginia.
Negotiated various transmission and distribution easement agreements and
other agreements for large public utility, including agreements relating to
the joint use of rights of way between utilities.
Assisted numerous clients in the acquisition, sale and finance of various
developed and undeveloped commercial properties, with transaction values
ranging from $100,000 to more than $35,000,000.
Bob received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Stanford University in 1992
and his J.D. from the University of Virginia in 1999, where he served on
the Editorial Board of the Journal of Law and Politics. He was admitted to
practice in Virginia in 1999.
Bob is actively involved in various community and civic organizations,
including serving as a lector at his church and as an officer and long-standing
board member of his homeowners’ association and of the non-profit
organization Rebuilding Together of Richmond (formerly known as
Christmas in April), which specializes in repairing and renovating the homes
of low-income and disabled individuals.
